Kaetsu Saturday School

Today the Honours Class studied reported speech. It was quite difficult for many of the students but all managed to use the required grammar to report on a 90-second interview with a partner.

The Standard Class looked at measuring lengths, widths and heights using the structure “X is xx cm long/tall/wide”.

The next lesson for the Honours Class will be a review of adjective order, adverbs and reported speech based around a detective story. The Standard Class will be looking at negative comparatives using “not as”.
 

◇授業では説明のために文法が出てきますが、今の段階では細かな文法を覚える必要はありません。授業で扱った表現を何度も声に出して、体になじませるように心がけてください。

11月10日

Today the Honours Class studied adjective order in relation to foods. It was challenging in places and students had to think about whether the adjectives they used were more changeable or intrinsic to the foods.

 
The Standard Class studied simple comparatives (-er), also related to food. It was quite difficult but everybody managed to create at ;least one sentence using a comparative.
 
Next week, the Honours Class will look at adverbs of manner in relation to describing people. The Standard Class will look at television and complex comparatives (more + long adjective).

11月17日

Today, the Honours Class wrote adverb poems and took part in a brainstorming exercise. The quality of the poetry was very good indeed but the students ought to be more active in speaking and listening to one another.
 
The Standard Class looked at longer adjectives and this was quite difficult, especially when used to compare and contrast.
 
Next week the Honours Class will study reported speech and the Standard Class will study measuring.

◇このところ、英語上級クラスの人数が増えてきています。お互いにディスカッションする機会も多くなってくるので、恥ずかしがらずに英語でコミュニケ―ションをとるよう心がけてください。

◇スタンダードクラスは午前も午後も少人数で授業をおこなっています。恐れずに先生に話しかけてみましょう。


 

Today the honours class studied about winning the lottery and wrote about how they would spend a billion dollars. The reading part of the lesson was quite challenging; it was adapted from an article in Forbes. The writing was done very well and in the future the class will work on giving more interesting details in their work.
 
In the advanced and standard classes, we looked at routines and simple verb phrases to describe routines. It was difficult for some students to write about their routines but everybody completed the reading comprehension exercise quickly.

◇入試が近づいてきたこともあり、少しずつ受講生が増えてきています。また英語経験者クラスのレベルが上がってきています。英語経験者クラスの今回の授業で勉強したVocabularyは、squander, precautionary, loot, hefty, Jackpotなど、おそらく大学受験生でも答えられないものvばかりです。もちろん単語だけで英語力を判断できませんが、小学生のうちに数多くの英単語を知っていることは、この先、大きなアドバンテージとなっていくはずです。

Today the students in the Honours Class read and wrote about future predictions. The reading was very challenging but all did well with it. The writing was very well done with plenty of supporting statements to make their predictions more believable.

 
The Standard Class studied daily routines and telling the time to the hour and half hour. It was difficult but all managed to write their routine with some support.

◇上級者クラスでは、かえつ有明中の入試も意識した難易度の高い文章を読んでいました。ライティングでは、子どもたちが書いたものをマーク先生がその場で添削していました。戻ってきた答案を見直し、文法などの確認をしておいてください。

◇初級者クラスでは、今はまだスペリングなども苦労していましたが、あまり焦らずに、楽しんで参加していただければと思います。

 

◇マーク先生からのコメントです。
 

Today the Honors class looked at giving directions, and analyzed a set of directions with questions that relied on logic and a little mathematics. They also wrote directions from the main gate of their schools to their classrooms. Afterward they gave verbal directions from their nearest station to their home or school.

The Standard and Advanced classes looked at differences in room arrangements and furniture. The Advanced class also looked at making judgments regarding which arrangements were better and why.
 

◇英語上級クラスは、二学期になってから人数が増えてきました。かえつの英語入試を検討している方も多いのではないかと思います。KSSでも授業がなるべく対策につながるように配慮していきます。
